We love tearful, heartfelt thank-yous, so naturally we get pretty excited for Emmys night, which involves plenty of those touching moments of gratitude along with an extra helping of A-list glitz, glamour, and humor.
When the following women took to the microphone to speak from their hearts, they all had one fabulous thing in common: Thanking the other important women who helped them get to this moment. Check out the tearjerker ways they paid tribute to those special ladies.
A special sibling mention (one of many!) that had us choked up: “And finally, I really just want to say thank you to my family, who have stood beside me my entire life. My sister ChiChi: You are my very best friend. I am humbled to call myself your sister. I love you so much."
-- Uzo Aduba, who won for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of Crazy Eyes in "Orange is the New Black"
We adored this sincere shout-out to her comedic sisterhood: “I love powerful, funny women. I love you gals so much.”
-- Julia Louis Dreyfus, speaking to her fellow nominees after she won Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her role on "Veep"
By far, the best speech of the night, which also included a moving Harriet Tubman quote: “The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is simply opportunity. You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there."
--Viola Davis, who received a standing ovation after winning for Best Actress in a Drama Series for "How to Get Away With Murder"
Another totally cool sisterhood moment: “Here's to all the writers...the awesome people--people who have redefined what it means to be beautiful, to be sexy, to be a leading woman, to be black. And to the Taraji P. Hensons and Kerry Washingtons, the Halle Berrys, the Nicole Beharies, the Meagan Goodes, to Gabrielle Union. Thank you for taking us over that line."
– Also Viola Davis, whose touching speech left many in the audience in tears
Okay, fine, our tears during this one were more tears of laughter: “Thanks, everybody, who has helped me, and the girl who gave me this sort of a smoky eye... I really love it. And I wanna thank my family.”
-- Amy Schumer, who seemed totally enthused when her show "Inside Amy Schumer" won for Best Variety Sketch Series
But she did get serious, for a second: "And I want to thank my sister Kim, who's the only reason I'm alive and breathing." --Schumer once again, in a momentary break from making everyone laugh
She's no stranger to Emmy wins--or to the excellent work of her peers: “I feel like I won the lottery. You all are amazing and should be up here as well.”
--seven-time Emmy winner Allison Janney, speaking to her fellow nominees after winning Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her performance in "Mom"
And finally, a woman who wanted to pay tribute to a higher power (a felame higher power, that is): “Thank you God…ess. Thank you, goddess. I promised the goddess I would thank her.”
--Jill Soloway, who was honored for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for "Transparent."
