Doctors Laughed As They Delivered Baby, Not Realizing How Big She Was

This 13-pound baby made quite the entrance. Florida mom Chrissy Corbitt was in the delivery room giving birth as the doctors and medical professionals around her began laughing. They were placing bets on just how big her baby was going to be.

“Fifteen pounds,” one person said.

“Fourteen-point-five,” another one guessed.

When Chrissy’s not-so-little bundle of joy named Carleigh finally made it into the world, her weight actually clocked in at 13 pounds, five ounces exactly. Her father, Larry Corbitt, knew a big number was coming before he even saw his baby with his own eyes.

“I couldn’t see when they were pulling her out, and the doctors were just saying, ‘Oh my gosh, oh my gosh,'” Larry said.

Not that the parents weren’t used to large babies.

Their four children before Carleigh had all clocked in at more than eight pounds, a couple even teetering on 10 pounds. But they were not prepared for a 13-pound baby at all—especially when it came to what their new daughter would wear.

Larry said, “We had everything covered as far as newborn clothes… but the nurse was like, ‘Well, newborns aren’t going to work,’ and threw (the diaper) in the trash.”

It had already been a challenging pregnancy for Chrissy. While she was expecting Carleigh, she developed gestational diabetes, which causes high blood pressure during pregnancy. Since she has anemia, she had to receive blood transfusions before she gave birth. And on top of all that, there was the stress of wondering whether her baby was at risk for developing diabetes when she was born.

Thankfully, her father said that Carleigh is “healthy and happy,” but Chrissy does not plan on having any more children after this one.

“My wife said it best when she said we’re going out with a bang,” he said.

Can’t say we blame her!
