For Years, Alex Trebek’s ‘Breakfast of Champions’ Was Snickers and a Diet Pepsi

Are you a fan of the long-running game show Jeopardy!? Then we’ve got a 2,000-point stinger for you: Snickers and Diet Pepsi make up the breakfast of this famous host. If you answered in the form of a question “Who is Alex Trebek?” then you’re correct! The legendary announcer shared his eating regimen, and we can’t help thinking we’re doing this whole dieting thing all wrong.

In a 2014 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the then-73-year-old was asked about his secret to looking so young. “People often ask, they say, ‘You appear to be in good shape, do you work out?’ I say, ‘No.’ ‘Do you diet?’ ‘No.’ ‘Do you eat well?’ ‘Well, sort of,’ but my breakfast of champions for years was a Snickers and a Diet Pepsi.” (We admit we’ve had these kinds of morning meals before!)

“This past year, I ran into a nutritionist who said, ‘Oh, Alex, that’s terrible! You’ve got to be eating better than that at the start of the day.’ So I changed. I stopped eating Snickers and Diet Pepsi and I replaced them with Milky Ways and Diet Cokes, so you’re not going to catch me eating properly in the mornings,” Trebek joked.

Today, Trebek is 78 years old and is still going strong, quizzing contestants on a daily basis. (His Jeopardy! contract doesn’t end until at least 2020, although he’s hinted at retiring.) So how does he still have so much energy despite being, quite frankly, old enough to have retired years ago?

“I do have a good solid dinner every evening, but I find that there must be some kind of camel blood in me because if I’m working outside — and I love working around the house — if I’m doing physical labor I never think of food; I don’t get hungry, I don’t get thirsty, and as a result my body cramps up like mad in the evenings, and I just go crazy complaining. And so I should drink more water, but I don’t have a regimen, a good health-type regimen.”

We’d bet very few doctors would recommend the Alex Trebek diet, though we do admire his laissez-faire attitude towards health eating. Losing weight obviously has its health benefits, but Trebek’s eating habits are a nice reminder that we shouldn’t always deprive ourselves, either!
