An all-in-one miracle cream or serum that reduces wrinkles, prevents blemishes, boosts collagen, and removes under-eye bags might not exist, but there just might be a tool out that that can: Ladies, meet the derma roller.

Dermarolling has all but taken over the beauty industry, and for good reason: A study published in an August 2018 issue of the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology concluded that the best dermarollers have the power to “produce noticeable improvements in lines and wrinkles, skin laxity, and skin texture.” But what exactly are these little needle-like tools?

What is dermarolling?

Dermarolling, also known as microneedling, involves rolling a tool that’s studded with hundreds of tiny needles ranging anywhere from 0.1 millimeters to 1.5 millimeter in diameter across your face. In the process, these devices make hundreds of tiny micro-injuries on the surface of your skin, which in turn stimulates collagen production and allows your serums and skincare products, such as anti-aging oils, to penetrate deeper into your epidermis.

That’s good news, since collagen production naturally begins to slow with age — one of the main reasons wrinkles begin to appear. Using a dermaroller on mature skin will reboot your collagen production and help you maintain a youthful appearance.

If the thought of creating small wounds in your skin sounds painful, it’s worth noting that only a light amount of pressure is required, with most saying they feel no pain during the experience (If you find it does hurt, ease up on how hard you’re pressing). It is typical, however, to feel some tingling or possibly a slight stinging sensation if you use your roller directly after sanitizing the head with rubbing alcohol. Afterwards, your face might be red, but many users say they notice that their skin is more radiant when they wake up the next morning.

How to Dermaroll

If you’re on board and ready to get glowing skin, follow these steps for the best results. Start by running your device’s needles under hot water, then use rubbing alcohol to finish sanitizing your tools. Do this each time you use your roller, and once more after use.

Next, wash your face and apply a layer of serum, such as hyaluronic acid, to your skin. With light pressure, begin to roll the dermaroller horizontally across your skin, then switch to vertical strokes, as shown in the image above. Do this for about two minutes. Don’t roll over blemishes, and be very gentle near your undereye area.

Once you’re finished, apply your facial products and a thick layer of face moisturizer. It’s best to avoid using retinols at the same time as dermarolling.
