Now that it's officially September, it seems like Halloween is just around the corner. And as we slip into the spooky spirit, our fingers are itching for a good mystery book to pick up. Sure, we could revisit one of the classics — Dracula always manages to do the trick, and rereading pretty much any of Stephen King's novels is good for a scare. But there's nothing quite like the thrill of picking up a new mystery you haven't read before and uncovering all of its twists and turns.
So before you break out the crafts and start totally redecorating your house for Halloween, check out one of these frightening reads. You just might discover a classic you've never heard of, a new favorite series from an old favorite author, or a story you simply can't put down until its done.
Looking for a murder mystery? A paranormal thriller? A tale of suspense and secrets that will have you on the edge of your seat? Authors like James Patterson, Sue Grafton, and Teresa Driscoll have you covered. And when you're sufficiently terrified out of your mind and scared to turn the lights out before bed, you can always put that creative energy towards DIY Halloween decorations to make with the little ones or funny Halloween costumes that will leave you a legend.
Now, who's ready to settle in beside the fireplace while no one else is home, kick your feet up, and start in on a good book? Just make sure that you lock all the doors and windows. After all, you wouldn't want the wind blowing the bathroom door shut upstairs right as you get to the part where the killer is creeping into the protagonist's home, would you? That might just be a little too spooky for us.
Check out the gallery below to find the scare that's right for you.

A lost little boy finds them, but it isn't long before even more kids wandering through the woods end up in Marlene's care. When the time comes, Marlene will have to decide whether she should try to protect all the kids in her care or abandon the rest in favor of protecting her own children.
