Betty White’s Diet Isn’t ‘Proper,’ But It Sure Sounds Delicious

At age 97, Betty White is still beautiful as ever, not to mention sharp as a tack. Considering her long and incredibly successful life, it’s no surprise that people are curious about her diet. Is she secretly vegan? Did she know about the keto diet before it was popular? As it turns out, the Golden Girl’s go-to meals are totally different from the food on other celebrities’ plates.

In true Betty White fashion, she’ll be the first to admit that she doesn’t eat a “proper diet,” as she did in an interview with Bon Appetit. “Red Whips are my curse,” she joked, referring to the licorice candy.

Though White sure has a sweet tooth, it seems her desert island food choices would be more akin to what you’d find at a State Fair — or a bar. In a Parade article, she says she loves vodka and hot dogs, “probably in that order.” She elaborated in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar: “I don’t eat anything special. French fries. Hot dogs if I can get ’em. And I’m not a big breakfast eater. I’ll have a sandwich at lunch and then come home, and Pontiac and I have a vodka on the rocks and then our dinner. You can’t get much better.” An afternoon cocktail with your dog every day does seem like a recipe for a life well-lived to us.

Funny enough, while Betty doesn’t consider herself much of a home cook, she does have a few signature dishes up her sleeve. Her recipe for chicken wings has made the rounds on the internet quite a few times. With ingredients like butter and a full cup of brown sugar, the homemade wings don’t sound super healthy either. But they do sound pretty darn yummy, don’t they?

But it’s not all meat and spirits for Betty, she does enjoy a fair share of citrus fruit when she’s in the mood for something a bit more nutritious. While commenting on fad diets from the past, she said, “There was one where you ate nothing but grapefruit. I love grapefruit, but I also love other things.” She also enjoys “lots and lots of lemon,” especially when she puts it in her vodka!

Cheers, Betty! Here’s to more delicious meals — and a wicked sense of humor — for years to come!
