Her First Date at Cheesecake Factory Was Going Well, But Then Her Date Fell to the Floor, Dead

Tags:

Janie Hall was on an exciting first date at the Cheesecake Factory in Kansas City, MO with a man she’d just met face-to-face for the first time. Their Friday lunch was going really well–until the man stood up from the table and fell to the floor.

“We were just sitting there talking,” Hall, 45, told the [Joplin Globe](http://www.joplinglobe.com/news/localnews/joplin-woman-saves-man-s-life-on-first-date/article32593575-b88c-535d-8acf-40ae3216e2af.html) of her date, a man in his 50s she’d met online. “The food had been picked up for at least 45 minutes. We were having a great conversation.”

Sounds like an awesome start to what can be an awkward part of dating, right? But then the man coughed three times, stood up to excuse himself from the table, and fell face-first to the floor.

“It was like a light switch,” Hall said. “He was talking, and then he was on the floor dead.”

The man had no pulse, says Hall, who is now being hailed as his guardian angel. A former respiratory therapist with experience in a trauma unit, Hall moved quickly. With the help of another diner, she rolled her date on his back, and began CPR. She was quickly joined by Becca Bartholomew–a young server who wasn’t even supposed to be at work that day, but had picked up an extra shift–who sprang into action.

The two women took turns performing CPR on the man, and Bartholomew directed other workers at the Cheesecake Factory to call 911. Another worker counted seconds for them while they worked to bring the man back to life.

After about four minutes of CPR, a faint pulse returned. He took a breath, and the ambulance arrived.

The man, whose name wasn’t released, is now recovering in the hospital, but Hall says that he’s already asked her for a second date. We’re glad to hear it–we’d say he owes her at least one more drink!

“He has asked me out again. The waitress wants to come along, as well as his two daughters and his granddaughter,” Hall said, laughing. “I definitely think we will have a group with us on our next date.”

We love that idea! But most importantly, we’re inspired by Hall’s crucial message she now wants to send to others. (No, it’s not to take your first date at the Cheesecake Factory–though the thought certainly crossed our minds!)

“My hope is that maybe somebody will hear this story and become CPR-certified or be quicker to respond because this happened so suddenly,” said Hall. “I’m proof that you never know when you may need to know it.”

Amen to that. We’re so glad the man is recovering–and that there’s another date planned!
