Man Tries Sending 2,000 Romantic Messages In Bottles, Until He Gets a Response

Tags:

Grieving widower Craig Sullivan planned to send 2,000 messages in bottles looking for love again after his wife passed away. But when the lonely Scotsman started putting his plan in action, he got a very unexpected response. And let’s just say it was less than romantic.

Sullivan came under fire for the negative impact his bottles would have on the environment. When Helen Gill was walking on a beach with her boyfriend, she found 30 of those bottles with Sullivan’s message inside, and she had a lot to say to The Telegraph about it.

“They had lots of messages inside about finding love. [It] may be romantic, but what is it doing to the environment?” Gill said.

And Gill actually replied to Sullivan’s message, encouraging him to think of the environmental impact of all those bottles in the water. Gill also pointed out that the bottles could potentially be smashed and broken before reaching the shore, which would pose a hazard to beachgoers.

On Sullivan’s end, he was inspired to do messages in a bottle from the viral essay, “You May Want to Marry My Husband,” written by the late Amy Krause Rosenthal, who was fighting ovarian cancer before she passed. In the article, she spoke about her beloved husband’s finest qualities that any woman would be lucky to have.

Sullivan had written on his Medium page that he “wondered what [his] own wife might have written,” before she died 18 months ago, had she had the chance to write such an essay. And he thought about “how her appraisal of [him] would have made the best and most honest advert for anyone who might wish to meet [him].”

But after facing backlash from folks about the bottles, he has since forgone that plan. But there is a bright spot coming up for him.

He wrote on Facebook, “[The backlash has] been quite saddening but it won’t affect my optimism or plans — to find someone new.”

In fact, he already has some dates lined up from responses from other bottles he had sent out, as well as positive messages on his social media pages. Maybe one of them will give him a more romantic response than he got before!
