Divorced Mom Turns Wedding Ring Into Meaningful Birthday Gift for Daughter

Divorce is tough, especially when kids are involved. But divorced mom Karen Beardsley of Erie, Pennsylvania, was able to focus on the one silver lining in her failed marriage: Her dear daughter.

So when it came time to decide what to do with her old wedding ring, Beardsley decided that instead of selling it, she’d have it refurbished into a beautiful necklace for her 20-year-old daughter, Devin Petit.

“I wanted to give her a special gift for her 21st birthday and I know she likes jewelry as much as I do,” Beardsley told BuzzFeed News.

Once the idea popped into her head, Beardsley backtracked to the jeweler where she originally purchased her ring.

“I think it represents successful co-parenting over the years and the love that both her dad and I have for her,” Beardsley said.

How sweet! And her daughter, Devin, was clearly touched by her mom’s thoughtful gift — and the beautiful story behind it.

“My mom gave me this necklace this morning as an early birthday gift,” Petit posted on Twitter. “It’s made from the diamonds of her wedding band. She said although her marriage to my dad didn’t work out, they both agreed I was the best thing to come from it, which is why she wanted me to have it.”

“She’s genuinely the sweetest, and I’m so thankful to have parents like them,” Petit added in a comment below her post.

As soon as Petit’s tweet went live, several users began commenting on the sentimental gift. Some even shared their own stories.

“My mum didn’t give me a necklace, but after her divorce she kept us fed, clothed, and we had a roof over our head. Couldn’t ask for anything more, but this is just so sweet,” one user wrote. “Such a beautiful idea. Love that both parents are united in their support for you even after a divorce!” another added.

Both Petit and Beardsley were shocked at the social impact the photo made. Petit also said she felt sorry for those who said they wished their parents could be as kind and forgiving as her mother has been. Yet Beardsley wasn’t too surprised that her daughter was moved by the symbolic necklace.

“Our young adults care more about family, tradition, and keepsakes than we’re led to believe,” Beardsley said. “But, mostly, I’m glad Devin loves it!”

We can’t think of a more wonderful way to transform a tragic situation into a happy memory. Kudos to this mom for her thoughtful gesture — and for keeping her daughter’s happiness as top priority even after a painful breakup. Successful co-parenting, indeed!
