What a Fan Confessed About Mr. Rogers Has Shattered Every Heart Years Later

Tags:

Nearly everyone who knew Fred Rogers in real life said that his kind, gentle on-screen persona was identical to his true self. But this inspirational story shows they may not have realized just how far out of his way he went to brighten others’ lives during his free time.

The Facebook page Films for Action recently posted a tribute to the late, great Mr. Rogers, and his fans left comments with their own stories about the man. One, though, from Pete Singer, of Oakdale, MN, detailed such a generous good deed, it’s shocking that it didn’t get more attention when it happened years ago.

“I was friends with a teen who had a disability similar to Autism. Then he got terminal cancer. He loved Mr. Rogers, especially the Land of Make Believe. His mother sent the show a message asking if there was any way they would send her son, who was now nearing death, one of the puppets from the show. A few weeks later, someone called the house and asked to speak with her son. She informed the caller that her son was asleep. The caller asked when her son would likely be awake. She told him, and the house phone rang at that time. The caller asked for her son, and she passed the phone to him. Later that day I arrived at the house, and my friend said to me, “hey, you know who called? You know who called? Mr. Rogers!”

So not only did this very busy celebrity make a personal call to someone who surely could’ve used the pick-me-up, but he also chose not to wake up the sleeping fan in favor of calling AGAIN at a more convenient time for the young man. The world sure could use more people like Fred Rogers right now.
