They say it's never too late for true love, and newly wedded couple Ed Sellers, 88, and Katie Smith, 89, just proved that saying is truer than ever these days. The starry-eyed couple, who just got hitched on July 16, married a whopping 70 years after their very first date.
The last time Smith and Sellers had gone out together was in the 1940s, when Smith was 15 and Sellers was 14. They had dated for three years, but Smith was from a very strict, religious family that required all their dates to be chaperoned. And these "dates" usually took place in her own living room. These types of restrictions unfortunately cause the pair to drift apart from one another.
Eventually, Smith and Sellers both went on to marry other people and raise their own families. But both of their first spouses passed away — Smith's husband died 17 years ago from cancer and Sellers' wife passed four years ago.
But after some time had passed for Sellers to come to terms with his wife's passing, his thoughts drifted toward his former high school sweetheart once more. And he couldn't stop thinking about her. So he went and drove 40 miles from his home to the town she lived in just to find her number in the phone book.
It took a few tries to reach her, but the determined romantic did not give up.
“I finally reached her son,” Sellers said. “And she couldn’t turn me down then!”
To his delight, Smith agreed to reconnect.
“He went to come see me after all those years and when I saw him, it just felt natural,” Smith said. “He was the same, just older!”
And for the next year and a half, Sellers drove those same 40 miles to see her twice a week, until he made the decision to propose.
“He got down on his knees and brought me a diamond,” Smith said. “I reckon I must have said yes!”
The two tied a knot in July while adorably sitting in rocking chairs at their ceremony. They also paid tribute to their late spouses by setting up an honorarium table for them.
And now, the senior sweethearts couldn't be happier together.
“She’s a beautiful lady, real easy to get along with, and we’re very compatible with one another,” Sellers said. "And she doesn’t fuss at me much.”
Smith added, “I like his humbleness and he never gets mad. He treats me like a queen.”
Never too late to be treated like royalty, we always say! Congratulations to the happy couple.
