George Clooney Defends Meghan Markle

George Clooney has never been a man to mince his words, especially when it comes to sticking up for his friends. The actor has a history of speaking out against the invasiveness of paparazzi photographers and media outlets who stir up drama where there is none. Meghan Markle — whose wedding to Prince Harry was attended by George and his wife Amal — is certainly no stranger to either of those upsetting issues. The duchess has basically been under a microscope of scrutiny since her relationship with Harry was confirmed. Now that she’s due to have their first child soon, the camera lenses and catty headlines have shown no signs of slowing down.

Earlier this year, Clooney compared Meghan to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, telling Who magazine, “They’re just chasing Meghan Markle everywhere, she’s been pursued and vilified. She’s a woman who is seven months pregnant and she has been pursued and vilified and chased in the same way that Diana was, and it’s history repeating itself.” Obviously, the media is a touchy subject for the royal family considering the paparazzi’s role in the accident that ultimately took Princess Diana’s life. Clooney continued to say he believed Meghan is getting a “raw deal” when it comes to tension in her family being aired out in public.

There’s no denying how negative some outlets have been when it comes to reporting on Meghan. It’s particularly unsettling considering this should be one of the happiest times in the former actress’ life — starting a family with her new husband. Clooney spoke up again more recently to defend Meghan against anyone who believes cruel rumors about her. While talking with Good Morning Britain, he told reporters, “I think it’s a little unfair at times when […] the press can turn on you for sort of ridiculous reasons and for almost nothing, and it seemed to me to be a little unjust since she hadn’t done anything except just happen to live her life. He went on to describe her as “a really kind and smart and intelligent young woman.”
