Why You Should Have Your Pets Microchipped ASAP

Tags:

If you’ve ever had a pet run away, you know it’s a heart-stopping experience. Cats, dogs, and even other little critters like guinea pigs and rabbits truly are a part of the family, and when they’re not safe and sound at home, it can be devastating.

Microchipping your pet is a simple and affordable way to ensure that your pet is returned home swiftly and safely. If you have yet to microchip your pet, here are a few reasons you need to head down to your local clinic stat!

We all like to think that our neighbors will be there for us in times of need, but sadly, there have been all-too-many cases where the stealing of a pet is suspected. If this happens to you, a microchip will eliminate any doubt about the ownership of the animal.

If you think an ID tag on your pet’s collar will do the trick, think again. These tags can easily fall off, or be deliberately removed. A microchip — which is about the size of a grain of rice and doesn’t cause any discomfort to the animal — is permanent. Your pet will always be able to be identified with their chip.

Getting your pet microchipped will help reduce strain on animal rescue groups, too, says Christine Robertson, the National Project Manager for the PETstock Assist Microchip Blitz. Sadly, it is estimated that about 1.5 million pets are euthanized in the US every year, according to the ASPCA. Luckily, you can help do your share by getting your pets microchipped.
