Giada de Laurentiis Had ‘A Christmas Story’ Moment One Thanksgiving

We’ve all had our fair share of cooking fails. Fortunately, celebs — even those with a cooking show — do too! Food Network star Giada de Laurentiis sat down to talk with Bravo’s food-centric blog The Feast about her most embarrassing kitchen mishap, and it’s a doozy.

In her interview, the 46-year-old revealed that when she first started out in the catering business, she was booked to make a turkey for a family’s Thanksgiving. Everything was going according to plan until she tripped over the family’s dog. Do you see where this is going?

“I love cooking Thanksgiving. It’s actually, for me, one of the easier meals to cook because there’s so much planning you can do in advance, that you can plan it out in different stages. The thing is, they had a big dog, and I wasn’t used to cooking around dogs,” de Laurentiis said.

And in a scene that seems eerily similar to the one from Christmas morning in the beloved 1983 film A Christmas Story, the dog got to the turkey first.

“No turkey! No turkey sandwiches! No turkey salad! No turkey gravy! Turkey Hash! Turkey à la King! Or gallons of turkey soup! Gone, ALL GONE!” as Ralphie said.

Fortunately, de Laurentiis’ quick thinking and pasta expertise saved the day.

“The woman I was cooking for had some pasta sauces in her pantry, so I whipped up some pasta really fast. It was one of my first jobs out of school. I was pretty horrified.”

Today, it looks like de Laurentiis has mastered the whole Thanksgiving thing. Just look at the cheesy mashed potatoes she made for a Thanksgiving-themed episode of TODAY. Sorry, we’re just drooling all over ourselves. We vote that potatoes should always be that cheesy!
