Meet the world’s smartest bandage—soon to be making life easier for moms and dads everywhere.
Researchers at Swinburne University of Technology in Australia are testing a new type of bandage that actually “sucks out” bacteria from a cut. Testing two types of bacteria frequently found on human skin and that are known to cause wound infection, the researchers found that the bacteria was quickly adhering to these specially made bandages, which are created from a mesh of polymer filaments 100 times thinner than a human hair.
That means that in addition to protecting your wound from any bacteria getting in, as a traditional bandage would, these newfangled bandages can actually suck out whatever small amount of bacteria may have already entered the cut. It's like first aid of the future!
There's still some work to be done: According to IFLScience, the next and final stage of the research is testing the bandage on skin models--but early results look promising.
As for when these miracle bandages will be available at stores near you, you'll have to stay tuned--and we will too.
