Poor Kermit. Perhaps it would have been easier being green if he had been as doggone cute (literally!) as Forest, a golden retriever that holds the rare honor of being born green.
When Forest was born, he emerged with a very distinct Grinch-green hue. Spoiler alert: Forest's grassy color has been fading fast, but he's still as adorable as ever.
So what caused Forest's oddity? Science has the answer.
"It was all hands on deck, but then as the puppies started to arrive, we noticed that one of the puppies had green fur. We couldn't believe it," Louise told The Sun. "When we checked it out later, we found out it is very unusual and [has] to do with the placenta."
According to TIME, biliverdin could be the culprit. The green bile pigment in the placenta reacted with chemicals in Forest's mom Rio's amniotic sac giving Forest his Hulk-like hue. Fortunately, there aren't any health risks associated with the odd color.
"The color has faded quite a bit already and will be gone soon, I'm told," said Louise.
This adorable dog loves to hide, but he's comically bad at it!
This isn't the first time a dog has given birth to green puppies. In 2014, a canine in Spain gave birth to a litter of pups, two of which were bright green.
"I couldn't believe it when I first saw them," owner Aida Vallelado Molina told The Local at the time. "I thought the puppies were dirty and tried to clean them, but the color wouldn't come off."
In 2012, a golden retriever puppy was born, and he too had a green coat. Naomi Grimes and Kyle Murray, the dog's owners, named the puppy Hulk — quite fitting if you ask us!
So even though Forest's fur has stolen the attention, we can't help but laugh at Rio, Forest's mom, because she looks pretty darn proud to have given birth to her litter.
