Some of us really can't slim down no matter how well we diet and exercise. Recent research has revealed our genes may be to blame. What's someone who isn't genetically blessed to do? There's now an incredible solution out of Harvard and MIT and written about in the New England Journal of Medicine that can help those whose obesity is genetic: a simple injection.
Scientists have learned that people with a malfunctioning FTO gene, also known as the obesity gene, can't burn fat the way those who don't have the obesity gene can. Luckily, they've figured out a way to alter obesity sufferers' DNA. With an injection, they can turn off the genes that make it tough to lose weight. This revs up metabolism and helps the person burn off extra fat. The DNA change also is believed to counteract the effects of eating fatty foods.
The shot isn't quite ready for public consumption yet, but researchers are continuing to look into the best ways to use this breakthrough outside of experimental settings. For those battling obesity-related conditions, like high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes, this help can't come soon enough.
