Woman Raises More Than $385,000 for Homeless Man Who Gave Her His Last $20

One night, a homeless man helped a stranded woman on a Philadelphia highway. In less than a month, she helped repay him for his good deed in a way that went above and beyond either of their expectations.

Kate McClure, 27, said on a GoFundMe.com campaign that she was driving on Interstate-95 at night when she suddenly ran out of gas. After she pulled over, the homeless man, named Johnny Bobbitt, Jr., knew something was wrong. Johnny, 34, who is also a veteran, went up to her car and told her to get in and lock her doors.

“A few minutes later, he comes back with a red gas can,” she wrote, “using his last $20 to make sure I could get home safe.”

Kate wrote that she didn’t have any money to pay him back on the spot, but she and her boyfriend returned to him shortly after to give him some money, clothes, and food. But it still didn’t feel like enough.

“I wish that I could do more for this selfless man, who went out of his way just to help me that day,” she wrote. “Truly believe that all Johnny needs is one little break. Hopefully with your help I can be the one to give it to him.”

So she set a goal of raising $10,000 for Johnny in 15 days — and far exceeded her original expectation with more than $385,000 raised for him. Donations continued to pour in even after Johnny requested that they stop, so they could go to someone else in need instead.

Though Kate has helped set up appointments for Bobbitt with a lawyer and financial planner, Johnny maintains that he will not be keeping all the money.

“I just want to do the right thing,” Johnny said. “This money was given to help me. Why not help other people in similar situations or people that are actively helping other people in different situations?”

He plans to use some of the money to buy a place to live and a car while he works on getting re-certified as a paramedic (one of his former jobs). Then, he plans to use the rest to make donations to other organizations helping the homeless.

Talk about paying it forward! Beautiful.
