As those affected by Hurricane Harvey start putting their lives back together, local animal shelters are still dealing with overcrowding. Rescues are doing what they can to feed and house pets, many of whose owners have been displaced. To aide the ongoing effort, Southwest recently flew 64 dogs and cats from Texas shelters from Austin to San Diego, and the photos are pawsitively adorable.
Operation Pets Alive! and the Helen Woodward Animal Center (HWAC) in San Diego worked with Southwest to transport the more than 60 shelter animals — many of whom were facing euthanasia before the hurricane hit — so that these pups and kittens would potentially find their forever homes.
“These are the silent victims,” Mike Arms, the president of Helen Woodward Animal Center, said in a statement. “There are shelters that have been devastated by Hurricane Harvey, without electricity, without supplies.”
“Operation Pets Alive! has taken in an overwhelming number of orphan dogs and cats who had inhabited those shelters before the storm and were suddenly facing euthanasia simply because they had no place to go. We are honored to help save those lives and we are lucky to have incredible friends like Southwest to help make this all possible," the statement concludes.
Four team members from HWAC traveled to Texas to make the 1,400-mile trip back with the animals in tow. Judging by how doggone cute these furry travelers were, we wouldn't be surprised if fewer than 64 animals made it to the shelter on account of the flight crew adopting one or two of them. We know we wouldn't have been able to help ourselves!

More shelters are taking in animals from rescues in Texas. A group of organizations in Waukegan, IL, flew in 180 pets from Houston shelters, and they too will work to ensure these little guys are all adopted.
