When a Stranger at Kroger Noticed Her USMC Sweater, He Started Grabbing the Food in Her Cart

GOSHEN, Ohio — There’s no doubt that military men and women make tremendous sacrifices to serve our country, but it’s not just the people in uniform who are affected by deployments and wars. The parents, spouses, and children of servicemen and servicewomen must go about their lives as usual when their loved ones are away, but they do so with the constant fear and worry that the person the love is in danger.

We are quick to applaud the military, as we should be, but some might forget about the ones left behind, and that would be a disservice.

Fortunately, Casey Carpenter, a wife of a Marine, felt the love and appreciation for not only her husband’s work but also her own. As she stood in the checkout line at Kroger, Carpenter caught the attention of the man in front of her. Noticing her United States Marine Corps sweater, he asked her if the sweatshirt was hers. She told him it belonged to her husband, Austin. When the man asked if Austin was there to thank, Carpenter said, “Thank you, but unfortunately, he’s deployed right now.” That’s when the man snatched the food right out of her cart.

Carpenter was speechless when the man exclaimed that he was going to buy her groceries right then and there. Stunned, Carpenter wrote on her Facebook after the act of kindness that she must have thanked the man at least a half a dozen times.

A veteran himself, the man replied, “That place over there almost took me away from my wife and my four kids. Promise you’ll stay true and honest to him while he’s gone and love him like you’ve never loved him before when he gets home.”

Remembering her husband by wearing his sweatshirt during everyday things like running errands tells us Carpenter has very much lit a candle for her husband, and she is probably eagerly awaiting his return.

“There’s still so much good in the world and we need to start focusing on that rather than focusing on all the bad,” Carpenter ended her Facebook post.

Amen to that!

And given how many times her post has been liked and shared, it seems like her message is really resonating with the world.

“I’m so blown away that it has gotten this far!” she told Woman’s World. “I was really just trying to show my small town that there are good people still out there!”

You’re so right, Casey! And just like the millions who have thanked her husband and all our armed forces for serving our country, we want to thank Casey and the kind man at Kroger for holding it down back at home.
