When Mike Rowe Didn’t Return Several Phone Messages from His Mom, She Got His Attention Much More Publicly

When your parents use your full name, you know you’re in trouble.

And that’s exactly how Mike Rowe’s mother started the email she wrote to her son after he failed to return her calls.

It’s comforting to know even famous people forget to call their parents back sometimes, right?

Peggy, Mike Rowe’s mother, tells her son she’s noticed how busy he is with his “little friends on Facebook.” Too busy, perhaps, to call her back. So she’s written him this very funny and very passive-aggressive email in hopes of hearing from him. And she recounted the tale of a lost handbag she was hoping to tell her son over the phone, but in excruciating detail in written form.

Peggy, who is not typically a forgetful woman, accidentally left her purse in a Walmart parking lot. She and her husband, John, went back to the store to try and retrieve the misplaced bag, but it wasn’t where they expected. Through laughs, Mike reads about Peggy’s embarrassment as his dad “[runs] from trash can to trash can, dialing her cell phone, and sticking his head inside the receptacle,” hoping Peggy’s cell phone ring will lead him to her purse.

During her search for a manager, Peggy hears “the classic ring of an ancient telephone, unrecognizable to anyone born in this century—[her] custom ringtone.” And there, on a shelf near register 20, is her purse.

Peggy grabs her still-ringing phone, and answers John, who summons her outside the store to meet the woman who turned in her purse, Beverly. The trio laugh at Beverly’s story about forgetting her groceries at the store and thank her for her act of kindness, with Peggy vowing she’d never make a mistake THAT big.

At the end of the email, Peggy includes her phone number for “when you call us after dinner.”

Looks like Mike can’t get out of this one!
