These Nuts Are An Easy and Delicious Low-Carb Snack

We’re going to guess there aren’t any pili nuts in your pantry right now — you probably have never even heard of them. But it’s time to get to know this tasty treat. Pili nuts, which are incredibly rich in healthy fats and other crucial nutrients, make a delicious healthy snack, especially if you’re on a low-carb diet.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, pili nuts traditionally grow wild in the Philippines, but these little nibbles are quickly becoming popular in other countries, including the United States. Aside from tasting like a buttery mix of pumpkin seeds and olives (mmm yum…), pili nuts are also impressively high in monounsaturated fats (aka “good fats” that can lower bad cholesterol and reduce risk of heart disease). In fact, nearly half of the fat found in pili nuts comes from these beneficial fats, according to Nuts.com. Furthermore, pili nuts are considered to be a complete protein and are also packed with more magnesium than their nut counterparts.

In addition to their fantastic nutritional value, pili nuts may also lend an especially helpful hand to folks on the keto diet. According to Keto Vale, pili nuts are considered a keto superfood (comparable to the beloved avocado) due to their exceptional high-fat, low-carb content that can help keep you in ketosis and aid with your weight-loss goals. Furthermore, a specific fatty acid found in pili nuts might be particularly useful for whittling off visceral fat, the dreaded fat found around your midsection. Remember: Always talk to your doctor before trying any new eating plan, especially one as restrictive as keto.

The only downside of pili nuts is that they can be a bit tougher to find in grocery stores in the States than, say, almonds or cashews. Luckily, there are a few pili nut brands available for purchase online, such as Pili Hunters ($9.99, Amazon) and Pure Traditions ($14, Amazon). These filling-yet-light bites make great on-the-go snacks, as well as excellent toppings for salads or baked cheese. And if you’re feeling really adventurous, try some pili nut butter ($13.29, Amazon) or even a plant-based yogurt made from pili nuts.

Who knows? You might end up being “nuts” for pili!
