Salty Is the Friendliest Buck-Toothed Greyhound You’ll Ever Meet

Tags:

Salty isn’t your average greyhound pup. She has a very distinct smile that will keep you staring (and laughing) for days. Aside from Salty’s prominent front teeth, she also makes a chattering noise with her jaw whenever she’s happy, which has made her quite the star in a variety of pubs and cafes in Melbourne, Australia.

“Some people think the shaking is because she’s sick, scared, or cold,” Salty’s owner, Lucy, told The Dodo. “But she is definitely healthy, happy, and warm in the Melbourne summer!”

Chattering is actually a common trait found in greyhounds, but Salty’s buck-toothed appearance makes it all the more adorable.

“Salty chatters a lot! She chatters when it’s breakfast or dinnertime, she chatters when we come home and she wants cuddles, she chatters when she’s sleeping on me like a giant baby,” says Lucy. “She also chatters a lot when we go out. Salty really loves being with people, so she often chatters when we’re in bars, pubs, and cafés.”

While most dogs prefer to go to the park, Salty likes visiting the city and hanging out with the locals.

“We live in Melbourne, which is famous for its bars and cafés, and Salty is a true ‘Melbourite’ as she loves them, too,” says Lucy. “Salty’s favorite things are catching the train to go to a bar, or walking to our local cafés for a puppuccino. If she chooses her walk route, she always chooses to walk to the train station!”

Two years ago, Lucy rescued Salty (who is five years old) from Gumtree Greys — an organization that rescues and re-homes greyhounds in eastern Australia.

“As soon as I saw Salt (as she was called) I was smitten,” says Lucy. “I have a lot of cooking salts and flavored salts (about 14 types). It’s a bit of an obsession. So it just seemed so perfect that a dog called Salt would join our family.”

Though it may seem like Lucy rescued Salty, in reality, Salty rescued Lucy, giving her a spot in a new friend group and in the community.

“Getting Salty gave us an instant support network and amazing group of friends,” says Lucy. “We now volunteer with Gumtree Greys at its market stalls and it’s so much fun hanging out with our new friends and a bunch of greyhounds every weekend. It also helped us meet many of our neighbors and we have made lots of friends in our local area through Salty.”

“You can’t really explain how unconditional love changes your life,” says Lucy. “Salty is our baby and we are besotted by her.”

We’re not the only ones who are enamored with Salty. Once the community realized what a delight she was, she became an Instagram star!
