The last 25 months have seen actress Shannen Doherty experience round after round of chemotherapy, as well as countless radiation treatments in a bid to kill the cancer cells that had spread throughout her body.
And while some days have certainly been harder than others for the 46-year-old—a fact she often shares on her very open and honest Instagram feed—Shannen’s fortune has finally taken a turn in the right direction. That’s because Shannen is now in remission.
“What does remission mean?” she wrote on her Instagram page. “I heard that word and have no idea how to react. Good news? YES. Overwhelming. YES.”
Moments. They happen. Today was and is a moment. What does remission mean? I heard that word and have no idea how to react. Good news? YES. Overwhelming. YES. Now more waiting. As every single one of my fellow cancer family knows, the next five years is crucial. Reoccurrences happen all the time. Many of you have shared that very story with me. So with a heart that is certainly lighter, I wait. In the meantime, decisions. Reconstruction which is several surgeries. Decision on taking a pill for the next five years that comes with its own set of problems and side effects. I am blessed, I know that. But for now.... remission. I'm going to just breathe. #cancerslayer
And while the star is overcome with happiness over her cancer remission status, she does admit that the next five years of her life are “crucial.”
“Reoccurrences happen all the time,” she writes. “Many of you have shared that very story with me. So with a heart that is certainly lighter, I wait. In the meantime, decisions: reconstruction, which is several surgeries, and the decision to take a pill for the next five years that comes with its own set of problems and side effects."
“I am blessed; I know that," she continues. "But for now, remission. I'm going to just breathe. #cancerslayer"
Have I mentioned how much I hate needles? This was prep for today's petscan. I don't care how much a person has been poked and prodded, it never gets easier. @kurtiswarienko tells me I have a high threshold for pain but I don't see it that way. Here's the thing.... even with positive results, it's the next five years that determine so much. So, let's see how today turns out and then day by day. Live life to the fullest. Cherish every second. Love fiercely. And thank God for every second. I'll keep you all posted and thank you for your positive energy and prayers. 💕 and yes.... that is a puff ball on top of my head. Just happy it's growing!!
As previously reported by Australia's Woman’s Day, the Charmed alumni revealed that, sadly, since her diagnosis with breast cancer, the cancer had spread to her lymphatic system. Standing by her side during this tough time has been her husband-of-five-years, Kurt Iswarienko, and her mom, Rosa Elizabeth Doherty.
"The unknown is always the scariest part," she previously told Entertainment Tonight. "'Is the chemo going to work? Is the radiation going to work?' You know, 'Am I going to have to go through this again?' or 'Am I going to get secondary cancer?'”
“Everything else is manageable," Doherty said. "Pain is manageable, living without a breast is manageable—it's the worry of your future and how your future is going to affect the people that you love."
We're so happy to see that you're doing well, Shannen, and we'll continue to keep you in our thoughts and prayers.
