Parents doing crazy things on the sidelines of their kids' sporting events is not uncommon. After all, some moms and dads are just way too competitive, while others are adorably over-the-top with their encouragement and spirit. But when one parent did something downright cruel on the sidelines of a kids' rugby game, we're SO glad this mom stuck up for her son. Check it out.
Rochelle Mara, who lives in New Zealand, was standing by the field during her 10-year-old son's rugby practice when she overheard the mother of another kid laughing about the "big boy" who was "slowing the team down." Criticizing him for being unable to run as fast as the other kids, the woman also mentioned that Mara's son, Eljae, wasn't an "asset" for the other kids playing.
That's when Mara had heard enough. Leaning over, she identified herself as Eljae's mother--which caused the group of laughing parents to quickly walk away.
But that wasn't all this mom had to say about the incident. She took to Facebook next, typing out an open letter to "parents on the sideline," that has since gone viral and earned her many fans. (Warning: She uses some strong language in the post.)
"Eljae is out there on that field supporting your son in the game just as I'm out on that sideline supporting them - your son included!" write the incensed mom about the cruel conversation. "Be glad he didn't hear it himself. For a kid who's never played rugby prior to 4 weeks ago, he's doing a damn good job, and I tell him this every week. He does not need to hear your negativity."
Going on with her point about how parents at sporting games should be supporting ALL kids, she finished with a wish for good sportsmanship from everyone involved.
"Stand there on that sideline along with the rest of us parents and support OUR boys and girls! ALL OF THEM. Win or lose. It's a game. They're all out there playing the best they can. Number 8 included."
