Haven't we all been there? You see the supermarket clerk doing something totally irritating, and you make a snippy comment. Most of the time, though, we don't know the reason behind the clerk's action--and if we only knew the whole story we'd want to take those comments back in a flash.
That's what happened to Fawn LeMay--except she was on the receiving end of rudeness. The 28-year-old was bagging a customer's groceries in the canvas bag, loading the heavier stuff to create a stable bottom. After a fitting a few more items in, she put the bag in the cart.

The customer told LeMay to put more in the bag, but LeMay essentially refused, explaining she wouldn't be able to lift the bag. As she wrote in The Mighty, the customer's response stunned her: “You are part of the weak generation,” the person snapped.
What the customer DIDN'T know is that LeMay has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. "Basically, my body is made of faulty material. My joints dislocate easily, I end up with daily bruises I don’t remember getting, and my organs and blood vessels can easily rupture. Recently I’ve been dealing with a shoulder that likes to regularly dislocate." She's already had 40 surgeries; if she gets her shoulder treated, she'll be facing surgery #41.

The bottom line: Just because a person looks healthy, doesn't mean she is. It's a great thing to remember if we're tempted to jump to conclusions solely based on appearances.
