Tiny Animals to Distract You From Your Monday Morning To-Do List
Small animals certainly bring big joy to our busy lives. On those hectic, stressful days when we find it hard to smile, it’s amazing how seeing a miniature cutie can work some serious magic and give us the boost we need to power through. From baby animals like kittens and puppies to perpetually small creatures like miniature horses who never grow too much, it’s difficult to wear a frown on your face while looking at small animals. After all, it’s hard not to be reminded of how much we adore our own precious pets at home — especially if we’ve had them since they were just babies.
But even if certain small animals will never be our pets (sorry, pygmy hippos, there’s just no room for you in our backyards!), it’s still difficult to resist the urge to reach through our computer screen and give them a big hug. And with that, our to-do list for the day is sure to vanish completely from our minds yet again.
Don’t blame yourself for being so drawn to — and distracted by — tiny animals. Scientists say that we humans have a pretty powerful need to nuture, which makes perfect sense to us. As we all know very well, our own human babies are virtually helpless at birth, so nuturing them is pretty much essential to their survival.
But according to Psychology Today, some experts have argued that our mental programs aren’t always too fussy about what species we happen to be nuturing. They say it’s better for the survival of our species if we care too much for the little ones than not enough. Considering how many of us call our pet cats and dogs our “fur babies,” it wouldn’t be so shocking to us if it were ingrained in humans to give as much love as possible to our four-legged friends.
So go ahead, enjoy these small animals’ adorable faces — then get back to work!
