Christmas came a little bit early this year in the form of Southwest Airlines' annual $49 one-way ticket sale. Here's what you need to know about this almost-too-good-to-be-true deal.
From October 10 through 12, one-way fares start at only $49. This deal applies only to flights from October 31, 2017, through February 14, 2018. Southwest's yearly three-day sale extravaganza previously covered flights starting in November, but this year fliers get a whole extra month of savings!
A deal this good has got to have a catch, right? Unfortunately, discounts do not apply during the blackout period from December 20 through January 2. If you're spending Christmas with relatives but planned on being home for New Year's, you'll have to find a cheaper way to travel (or suck it up at checkout).
But this doesn't have to put your holiday plans on hold entirely. You can combine sale fares and regular fares if you need a round-trip ticket.
Another bummer hidden in the fine print: Sale fares are not applicable on Friday and Sunday domestic flights, so weekend getaways are pretty much out of the question. Ugh, not cool Southwest!
AZ Central reports that this is the first year Southwest hasn't blacked out travel dates during Thanksgiving, but that doesn't mean you'll find any bargains. With the holidays being a popular time to travel, it's likely that ticket prices for flights leaving the week of Thanksgiving are only going to climb.
If you're a member of Southwest's frequent flier program, now is the time to stretch those points. The number of Rapid Rewards points needed for a free flight depends on the price of the flight; lower prices mean fewer points needed.
Lastly, while it's easy to get caught up in Southwest's mega sale, don't just blindly purchase your tickets. Check fares and flight times on other sites because most airlines will price match. That means you won't have to herd your family through security at 5 a.m. to board your red-eye on time.
Safe travels, guys!
