4 Easy Hair-Care Tips for Beautiful, Healthy Locks All Summer Long

Tags:

Though we love summer, it’s not always a friend of our hair. Things like heat and exposure to harsh rays, along with salt water and chlorine, can all contribute to hair damage. Not to mention the humidity and frizz situation. But a few simple hair care tricks can make a world of difference when it comes to keeping your locks healthy and looking gorgeous in the summer months. Check out our tips below.

Deep condition regularly.

By regularly, we mean once or twice a week. In the summertime, it may seem counterintuitive to add moisture to your hair when it’s humid out, but the heat can dry out your strands. Giving it a moisturizing deep condition using an oil like jojoba or argan oil or a DIY hair mask helps protect it from further damage while also helping to keep frizz under control. All you have to do is apply your oil or hair mask from root to tip and leave on for a few hours or overnight under a hair cap!

If you’re going to be swimming a lot, do your locks a favor by rinsing the hair in fresh water and then applying an oil or deep conditioning mask first! This will help to minimize damage and dryness from chlorine or salt water. If your hair is dyed, use a product specifically formulated for color-treated hair! Try this one from Art Naturals ($12.30, Amazon).

Consider ditching your appliances.

Since your hair is already suffering damage from the heat outside, using heat tools on top of it only exacerbates the problem. So summer is the perfect time to opt for an au natural look by letting your hair dry sans heat. With regular deep conditioning your hair will be looking shiny and luscious as is, but if you’re nervous about frizz, try an air-dry styling cream like this one by Bumble and Bumble ($30.95, Amazon). Styling your hair in a braid or a pretty up-do is also a great way to keep it off your face and neck in the summer.

Use hair sunscreen.

Yes, you read that right. Hair sunscreen is an official thing, and we think it’s just great. Your hair, especially if color-treated, needs protection from the sun’s harsh UV rays. Try this one from Sun Bum ($14.05, Amazon). Just spray on in the morning and reapply in the afternoon if you’re out in the sun!

Don’t over-wash.

Since the summer months can be sweaty, it can be tempting to wash your hair everyday. However, doing so actually strips the scalp of essential natural oils that keep the hair moisturized and healthy. Try not to wash your hair more often than you normally would, but if you need to, consider opting for a cowash or cleansing conditioner instead of regular shampoo. These will give you a clean and fresh feeling without over-drying. We like this one from Renpure ($18.99, Amazon).
