Though I’ve been blessed with relatively blemish-free skin, when I do get a zit I scar easily. So after one too many leftovers from pimples past, I embarked on a quest to find a product with retinol to treat my post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from acne and even-out my complexion. To my surprise, it was an oil that did the trick.

My T-zone tends to get pretty oily, so I was hesitant about applying more oil to my face. But adding Sunday Riley’s Luna Sleeping Night Oil ($55-$105, Sephora) to my routine was a smart move. Your skin overproduces oil when it senses a lack of moisture, so adding a hydrating oil tells your body to slow its natural oil production. After using Luna religiously for the past two years now, I can safely say there is nothing to worry about — and the results have been tremendous!

Every evening after cleansing and moisturizing, I apply the oil directly from the dropper, rub it in allover my face, and head to bed. Not only does this retinol oil make my skin feel plump and hydrated, but it shrinks my pores and reduces any redness. (The latter is a game changer for me because my face often resembles a tomato.) I’ve also noticed my acne scars and hyperpigmentation lightening.

After a recent traumatic experience testing a new retinol cream (think burning, peeling, ultra-sensitive skin for days), I gained a newfound appreciation for Luna’s gentle effectiveness. It’s made with soothing chamomile and blue tansy (hence the oil’s rich sapphire hue), which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This gem of a product also contains chia seed oil to hydrate and smooth skin.

One common knock against Luna is that its blue color makes it messy, especially if you have white bed sheets. And while this is definitely a valid point, a rinse in the washing machine will lift any stains.

Initially, I bought mini size bottles of Luna and Sunday Riley’s Juno Antioxidant + Superfood Facial Oil ($36-$72, Sephora) to compare results. I never finished that first bottle of Juno and recently tossed it, but I’ve since invested in a full-size bottle of Luna.

I’m not the only one preaching the gospel of Luna’s wondrous benefits. Just ask the more than 1,100 people who gave it a glowing five-star review on Sephora’s website. So, if you’re on the hunt for a hydrating face oil to slather on before bed or layer under your makeup for a dewy look, I can’t recommend this one enough.
