September 14, 2015 marks 30 years since The Golden Girls premiered on NBC. To commemorate the occasion, our sister magazine, Closer Weekly, has uncovered some never-before-shared stories and photos from the TV show's cast members' families.
For instance, get a load of this behind-the-scenes gem of Betty White and Rue McClanahan, dressed in old men's clothing.
And this surprise: That Bea Arthur, aka Dorothy Zbornak, wasn't super-tight with the rest of the quartet. “My mom wasn’t really close to anybody," Bea's son Matthew Saks told Closer. "She just liked to go home and read the paper.” Bea was also the one who ended the show's seven-season run.
Still, the program broke ground, featuring an all-seniors cast, and found itself a permanent place in the hearts of many TV fans. As Rue's son, Mark Bish, pointed out: "I don't know if you ever could duplicate that particular chemistry." We couldn't agree more.
