Many of us have a weird habit around the holidays: We clearly value thoughtful, homemade presents over store-bought items we don’t need (like those macaroni pictures kids slave over for days to get exactly right), but we shell out tons of money on pre-made decorations. Shouldn’t hand-made décor be loved and cherished just as much?
We think so, and this simple Christmas garland makes it easy to embrace trimmings made with love. All you need is a string of Christmas lights and four different colors of ribbon that you like together--the blogger behind this festive idea uses a plain red ribbon, a burlap ribbon, a plain green ribbon, and a red and green patterned ribbon for a cohesive look. By simply cutting small strips of the ribbons and tying them around the string of holiday lights, you can create a garland that will light up the whole room. Make sure to alternate through the ribbon colors for the best look.
Since it’s more than a simple string of lights, there’s no need to hang this decoration, either. It can be draped over a mantel, like this blogger does, used as a unique table runner, or even strung around the rails of your staircase.
Watch the video below to see exactly how it’s made. Trust us, the hardest part will be picking out your favorite ribbons.
