15 Baby Girl Names From the 1950s That Stood Out From All the Rest

Tags:

The 1950s was smack dab in the middle of the Baby Boom, a time when couples who had been kept apart by World War II made up for it by growing their families. An average of 4 million babies were born each year throughout that decade in the United States alone, meaning there were a lot of birth certificates getting filled out at a lot of hospitals.

As fun as it is to look back at all the most popular names parents gave their newborns back then (especially for baby girls), we couldn’t help but get curious about the names that were chosen a bit less often. The Social Security Administration offers lists of the top 200 monikers for each decade going back to the 1880s, so we scrolled down to the bottom to see which young girls didn’t have to worry about being one of 10 students in their class with the same name. Hello, Mary B, Mary P, and Mary W!

During the 1950s, 625,568 babies were named Mary, the most popular girls name of the decade, but less than 20,000 young ladies were dubbed with any of the names listed below. Some of the more old fashioned choices make sense (sorry Mildred), but we were definitely surprised by the beautiful name ranked at 200.

Whether or not you were actually born in the 1950s, taking a look back at how trends change is always fascinating. Scroll down to see if your name would have been a more rare choice back in the day!
