15 Baby Girl Names From the 1950s That Stood Out From All the Rest

This name, which means "clearing on a bank," barely cracked into the top 200 names of 1950s at 185. 

A similar name, Shelia, was slightly less popular further down at the 191 spot.

Even with a strong Latin meaning of "she who brings victory," parent's weren't all that interested in giving this name to baby girls in the 1950s. It clocked in at 186.

We have to admit it's a little surprising that this old fashioned name, which means "gentle strength," wasn't even further down the list. Instead, it ranked in at 187. 

In the 188 slot, this spin on the Biblical name Eve, meaning "life," was far less popular than the longer variation of Evelyn that decade, which ranked at 112. Of course, both of these precious names have risen in popularity since then.

It was still more popular for little boys to get this name, that means "from Denmark," instead of girls throughout the 1950s, which is probably why it was at 189 on the list.

Meghan Markle's actual first name might have been different if she was born a few decades earlier. It ranked in at 190 and originates in the Hebrew word for "ewe" (like the sheep).

Before it became known as a popular song by the Police, this Persian name, which means "dawn," was ranked at 192.

Parents who added that 'e' to the end of this name during the 1950s knocked its popularity down from 16 to 193.

Parents loved the name Patricia in the 1950s, which ranked as the number 3 name of the decade, but weren't as fond of this shorter version. This name just barely made it into the top 200 names at 197.

Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons would make a slightly different spelling of this name, "Sherry," more popular with their 1962 song, but it was in the 198 spot throughout the '50s.
