Finding a babysitter can be a challenging thing for any parent. After all, you're putting your child's life into someone else's hands for a period of time. It's hard to decide who's the best fit for such an important job. And even when you hire someone who you think will do a good job, the logistics of scheduling and payment can get in the way.
No one knows that better than mom Andrea Owen, who just decided to try a new teenage girl she just met to look after her kids.
After coming home that day, she made a realization while chatting with her husband about paying the new sitter.
"Jay and I started talking about how much babysitters charge, and I told him I like to ask them first what their hourly rate is," Andrea wrote in a post on Facebook. "My experience in this is usually the girls say, 'Whatever you want to pay me is fine.'"
It was soon after that when Andrea realized she wanted babysitters to stop that.
"THIS IS NOT OKAY," she wrote in all caps.
Her explanation behind it is that since babysitting is such a common first job for girls, teaching them to properly state their price now will set them up for success in their future jobs and not be afraid to ask for what they deserve.
She wrote, "Parents, teach your children, ESPECIALLY your daughters, to name her price and stand confidently in it. 'I would love to babysit your children and I charge X per hour.' It’s just one sentence. Practice it with her."
Wow! We think she's right on the money--literally.
