Certain Gel Nail Polishes Have Been Banned In Europe—Is the United States Next?

For millions of women, gel manicures at the salon are a form of self care. Every few weeks, turning your brain off for an hour or so while your nails get a little TLC is something of a ritual—but what if that ritual is putting your health at risk? On September 1, a ban went into effect in Europe on trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO), a chemical found in gel nail polishes, as animal studies indicated it could have a negative effect on reproductive health. While European nail technicians are no longer allowed to use products containing TPO, the chemical remains legal in the United States. Here, everything to know about TPO, whether it’s still safe for use, and gel polish alternatives.

What is trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO)?

Trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO) is an ingredient found in gel polish known as a photoinitiator.When the UV light that cures gel polish comes in contact with the photoinitiator, the polish solidifies, creating the hard, glossy finish of gel manicures. “A photoinitiator absorbs energy from the UV or LED lamps used in gel manicures, which sets off a chain reaction that links small molecules called monomers together to form long polymer chains, forming a solid film,” explained cosmetic chemist Kelly Dobos in conversation with TODAY.

The European ban on this product came as a result of animal studies. When researchers gave male rats large amounts of TPO, it negatively impacted the rodents’ reproductive health—results that convinced officials to proceed with the ban, telling European nail techs to dispose of any remaining products they have containing TPO—Is the United States next?

Is it safe to still use nail polish with TPO?

Gel manicures and pedicures are so popular in The United States in part because the polish lasts for two weeks (or more) and is resistant to chips. But if Europe’s latest move has you wondering if we’re next, board-certified dermatologist Michelle Henry, MD, founder of Skin & Aesthetic Surgery of Manhattan, doesn’t think we’re quite there. “The US takes a risk-based approach to regulation, which means the burden of proof of actual harm is higher than in the EU,” she explained. “It would likely take more studies in humans before a ban is considered. That said, many large international brands are already reformulating for consistency across markets, so consumers here may start to see more TPO-free options regardless of whether the US issues a ban.”

With all of that in mind, Dr. Henry says that gel polish containing TPO is still safe to use. “Our system looks at real-world risk and exposure, and since gel is applied to the nail plate—not the skin—the amount absorbed is likely very minimal. That said, it’s important to make sure the polish is applied carefully to avoid contact with the skin, she warns.

Are gel nails safe?

Long before Europe’s ban became news, there have been concerns over the safety of gel manicures. For starters, these manicures require a UV lamp to cure and harden the polish, and UV exposure is linked to skin cancer. Furthermore, many have taken to social media to share experiences of negative skin reactions to gel polish, burning sensations and weak and brittle nail beds after consistent gel manicures. While TPO might not necessarily be the biggest threat, the conversation surrounding the safety of gel nail polish has been ongoing.

What are some alternatives to gel polish?

If you’re committed to gel polish and are wary given these recent studies, TPO-free gel polishes do exist. And manicure alternatives such as dip powders don’t contain TPO. Press-on nails are another good option, as is regular nail polish, which is TP)-free. While it can be frustrating touching up drugstore polish after only a day or two when it chips, brands like Dazzle Dry have stepped up the game when it comes to DIY manicures.

I tried Dazzle Dry so you don’t have to

Unwinding in a nail salon might be therapeutic for some, but for me, it was the opposite. Tired of sitting in that seat an feeling antsy every two weeks, not to mention dishing out $60 every time my nails grew out, I made the switch to at-home manicures. While this gave my bank account a nice break, the appearance of my nails suffered: No matter what I did, my manicures would chip within three days. I had seen ads for Dazzle Dry, a standard nail polish that doesn’t use a UV light and promises a chip-free manicure for 7+ days, but I was deterred by the high price tag of $12.00 a bottle. But fed up with my choices of a pricey salon manicure or a subpar DIY mani, I decided to splurge on the $42 Mini Starter Kit.

So far, I’ve been impressed! It’s easy to do and the results are promising. After applying two layers of base coat, two layers of nail lacquer and one layer of top coat, the manicure dries completely in 5 minutes (that’s bee key for me, as someone who’s far too impatient to allow my nails to dry completely). While the speedy drying time was a big selling point for me, it’s the fact that my manicure stayed for 8 days without a single chip that’s made me a fan. And that’s not all!

Though it isn’t as thick as a gel polish, it has the same shine, which is a major plus. If you’re looking for an alternative to gel polishes, specifically those containing TPO, you might want to give this product a try.

Striking stars and stripes

Get the look:

Apply two coats of white metallic polish, like Sally Hansen Galactic in Chromatica, on all nails. Let dry completely.
Using blue and red striper polish (like China Glaze Stripe Rite in Midnight Blue and Roll Out The Red Carpet, draw alternating diagonal lines across the index and ring fingernails.
Draw and fill in five-pointed stars on the rest of the nails in the placement of your choice, using the blue and red striper polishes. Let dry, then seal all nails with clear top coat.

Get the look:

Paint all nails with two coats of a sheer pink-nude polish, like OPI Nail Lacquer in Bubble Bath. Let dry completely.
If you want, you can paint on the stars yourself with red, white and blue nail art striper polishes. But if you want to make it easier on yourself, simply stick on 2-3 of COKSDUPID Star Nail Stickers on each nail, evenly spaced out.
Seal all nails with a clear top coat.

What’s trending for 2025 summer nails?

For our upcoming summer 2025 nails, it’s all about bold, bright colors. Think hot pink, neon orange and royal blue. However, that’s not to say that we’re completely straying away from pastels—soft shades like butter yellow and baby blue work just as well for summer as they do for spring. Overall, this year’s summer nails are all about pops of color.

We’re spending time gearing up for Easter by decorating eggs, so why not decorate our nails too?! And luckily, it’s easy to paint on a pretty and festive manicure in a few simple steps! Just take a scroll through the Easter nails options below. From fabulous florals to beautiful butterflies, playful bunnies and more there’s one for everyone. Plus, read on to see the steps it takes to recreate the looks at home (or use these photos for inspiration for your next in-salon manicure).

DIY Easter nails to try

All of these eye-catching manicures can be done with a few tools and in four steps or fewer.

1. Pretty pearl accents

“Pearls always make a feminine, classic statement,” says celebrity manicurist Patricia Yankee. “And that’s just what this pearly nail look does for your hands — it gives them a touch of elegance!”

Get the look:

Paint all nails two coats of lavender polish, like essie Nail Polish in Lilacism. Let dry completely.

On your ring and index nails, use a toothpick to apply two curved rows of flat-back nail pearls, such as BrainKer Half Flatback Pearls. Place the first row of pearls in a semicircle above your cuticle, then curve the second row of pearls above the first.

Seal nails with clear top coat.

2. Easter nails: Bouquet of tulips

“Tulips are the quintessential spring flower!” says Yankee. “And because they tip the free edge of your nail, the flowers make your nails look longer.”

Get the look:

Paint all nails two coats of petal pink polish, like essie Nail Polish in In The You-niverse. Let dry completely.

On two accent nails per hand, create the tulips by using a lavender striper polish, like LeChat Cm Striping Nail Art in Lavender Flower, or a yellow striper polish, like Color Club Nail Art Striper in Yellow. Start at mid-nail and make three pointed bumps (or “petals”) and extend the color to the free edge. Let dry.

Using a white striper polish, like Sally Hansen I Heart Nail Art Striper in White, outline the petals with a “Y” shape and upside down “V” shapes. Let dry.

Seal nails with clear top coat.

3. Gilded Easter egg nails

“This gold leaf look is easy to create,” says Yankee. Bonus: You can also make matching Easter eggs.

Get the look:

Paint all nails two coats of lavender polish, like essie Nail Polish in Lilacism. Let dry completely.

On each nail, sweep on a nail adhesive, like Makartt Nail Foil Glue. Wait for the formula to turn from white to clear (it should feel tacky to the touch).

Place a precut nail-sized strip of gold foil, like WFAUIBR Gold Leaf Flakes, (shiny side up) onto each nail. Use your fingertips to press each strip down, applying varying levels of pressure at different points around the nail bed. This ensures the foil leaves behind a speckled design. Seal nails with clear top coat.

4. Beautiful yellow blooms

“Tiny daises blooming on your nails are the perfect nod to spring,” says celebrity manicurist Miss Pop.

Get the look:

Paint all nails two coats of bright pink polish, like OPI Nail Lacquer in Makeout-side. Let dry completely.

On two accent nails per hand, create the daisies by dipping a toothpick into yellow polish, like OPI Nail Lacquer in Exotic Birds Do Not Tweet, and make two circles of five dots.

Using a green striper polish, like LeChat Cm Striping Nail Art in Hot Green, make a “stem” under each flower that goes to the free edge.

Dip a clean toothpick in clear polish and use to place circular orange rhinestones, like LolliBeads Round Nail Art Rhinestones in Fire Opal, at the center of each flower. Seal nails with top coat.

5. Bejeweled bunny accents

Each adorable bunny has a rhinestone bow that gives nails a touch of sparkle.

Get the look:

Paint all nails two coats of pink polish, like Zoya Nail Lacquer in Yohanna. Let dry completely.

On two accent nails per hand, create the bunnies by using white striper polish, like Sally Hansen I Heart Nail Art Striper in White, and paint a half circle. Then, make two long oval ears on each bunny. Let dry.

Using a pink striper polish, like Sally Hansen I Heart Nail Art Striper in Hot Pink, paint the inside of the ears and add a dot for the nose. Let dry. Next, make the bunny’s eyes using black striper polish, like China Glaze Stripe Rite in Paint it Black. Let dry, then add a white dot at each center with the white striper polish; let dry.

Dip a toothpick in clear top coat and use it to attach two pink triangle rhinestones, find them in a set like KADS Triangle Colorful Rhinestones, to make a bow on each bunny. Seal nails with clear top coat.

6. Easter nails: Blinged out butterflies

“Butterflies are a beautiful symbol of spring,” says Yankee. “And these sparkling ones bathe your hands in beautiful light!”

Get the look:

Paint all nails two coats of hot pink nail polish, like Orly Nail Lacquer in That’s Hot. Let dry completely.

On two accent nails per hand, create the butterflies by dipping a toothpick into clear top coat and use it to place two teardrop rhinestones, find them in a set like GA&EN Nail Art Rhinestones Set, (with the point facing inward) at the center of the nails. Underneath the teardrops, place two heart rhinestones from the same set.

What are ombre nails?

Start with a base coat. Apply a clear base coat to protect your nails and ensure a smooth application.
Apply your base color. Choose your lightest shade and apply it to the entire nail as a base. Let it dry completely.
Use a makeup sponge. Apply both the light and dark colors side by side on a sponge, slightly overlapping them to create a blended effect.
Dab the sponge onto nails. Gently press the sponge onto the nail, moving it slightly up and down to blend the colors.
Repeat for intensity. You may need to repeat the sponging process 2-3 times to achieve a seamless gradient.
Clean up the edges. Use a brush dipped in nail polish remover to clean up any excess polish around the cuticles.
Finish with a top coat. Apply a glossy or matte top coat to seal the look and smooth out any texture from the sponge.

Pro tips for flawless ombre nails

Use a damp sponge to prevent the polish from absorbing too quickly.
Apply liquid latex or tape around your nails to minimize cleanup.
Blend with a brush dipped in acetone if you want a softer color transition.
For gel ombre nails, use a nail brush to blend the gel before curing under a UV lamp.

“The biggest mistake is using the same sponge on each nail,” says Edwards. “A fresh sponge will not [cause] pillage and gets you a smooth ombre look. Use one sponge, but break it off into 10 pieces.”

Bonus: If you are hesitant to dive into this look or want to play around with colors without having to commit to the work of applying the polishes, try press-on nails like imPRESS Nails instead. It will allow you to easily try out the style without commitment.
