We Couldn’t Believe Marilyn Monroe Was Ever in the Subway–and Neither Could This Guy
Marilyn Monroe might have been a California girl, but her heart belonged to New York City. She spent a glorious year in the Big Apple in the mid-1950s. She lived in a studio in the Upper East Side, took acting classes with such fellow students as Paul Newman and Marlon Brando, and hobnobbed with a bunch of celebrities, including Frank Sinatra and Gloria Vanderbilt. Later, she moved to hotel room in the Waldorf Astoria.

She had a lot fun. And, according to the New York Daily News, which recently published an article about MM’s year in Manhattan, she learned to stand up for herself. She’d write herself encouraging notes on stationary, like “Not a scared little girl anymore.”
That’s why we love this photo of Monroe waiting for the subway at the Grand Central subway station. She looks so glamorous as always–and so happy. But we’re sure that her fellow strap-hangers were flabbergasted to see her there. If you don’t believe us, take a look at the guy who’s photobombed this picture. He looks pretty gobsmacked to look over and see the classic Hollywood starlet just a few feet away.
