Princess Kate Reveals the Adorably Sweet Holiday Gift She Gave to the Queen at Her First Royal Christmas

If you’re one who’s ever stressed about getting family members–and especially new in-laws–the perfect Christmas gift, you’ll appreciate this anecdote Princess Kate recently shared.

In the upcoming ITV special Our Queen at Ninety, Princess Kate opens up about her first Christmas as a royal, and the special gift that she made for her new grandmother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth.

“I can remember being at Sandringham, for the first time, at Christmas. And I was worried what to give the Queen as her Christmas present,” Kate reveals, according to The Telegraph.

“I was thinking, ‘Gosh, what should I give her?’ I thought back to what would I give my own grandparents. And I thought, ‘I’ll make her something.’ Which could have gone horribly wrong,” the mother of two says, adding, “But I decided to make my granny’s recipe of chutney.”

To Kate’s surprise–and, we assume, her great relief–the Queen seemed pleased with the thoughtful gift.

“I was slightly worried about it, but I noticed the next day the chutney was on the table,” she explains. “I think such a simple gesture went such a long way for me and I’ve noticed since she’s done that on lots of occasions and I think it just shows her thoughtfulness, really, and her care in looking after everybody,” Kate says of the Queen.

There you have it! When in doubt, a homemade, thoughtful gift can do the trick–especially if it tastes delicious.
