Shania Twain Reveals Struggles After Life-Changing Diagnosis

Shania Twain has been through a lot in the 15 years since she released her last album. Not only did the country singer finalize a painful divorce with Robert “Mutt” Lange, she also developed an upsetting health issue.

Twain was diagnosed with dysphonia, a vocal-cord disorder that can cause hoarseness and trouble speaking. Essentially, it’s a nightmare for someone who sings for a living.

So she received voice therapy, but the problem persisted, keeping her from recording new songs for years. By now, she has regained her singing voice–albeit a much deeper sound than what she had before. And that’s what fans can expect to hear on her upcoming new album.

“I’m a different singer now,” she said. “There was a lot of coming to terms with that. It’s been one of the obstacles in my life I’ve just had to learn to live with.”

Twain believes the problem developed because of the stress of her divorce, which occurred after she discovered her ex had fallen in love with her best friend. Years later, Twain revealed she was engaged to said friend’s ex-husband—thrusting her into the center of tabloid drama again.

“I’ve learned a lot about myself,” she said. “It’s scary to learn how vulnerable you can be.”

So Twain decided to delve into those feelings of vulnerability for her new album. What’s more–she made the choice to write all her music herself.

“It needed to be really pure and my own story and my own emotional journey,” she said. “I was now alone all of a sudden, and I didn’t want to shy away from it. And that’s not a collaborative thing; it’s a very personal thing.”

So far, this “personal” album has no title, but Twain plans to get a single out in March and to release the whole album in May.

We don’t know exactly what to expect–but we know we can’t wait to hear it! Welcome back, Shania. We missed you.
