On the Sixth Anniversary of His Beloved Wife’s Death, World War II Vet Gets a Phone Call

What started out as a home renovation turned into a mystery when homeowner Allen Cook and his daughter Melissa found a crack in the ceiling. What they saw inside was just the beginning of a long-lost love story almost too sweet for words.

The letter Allen and Melissa found—dated May 4, 1945—was written by a woman named Virginia, and it was addressed to her husband, Rolf Christoffersen. At the time, Christoffersen was a sailor in the Norwegian navy.

“The envelope was old and yellow. It has never been opened. It was unbelievable when my son-in-law started reading it. In the letter, she was talking about the baby she was going to have,” Allen Cook told CNN.

Sadly, that letter never made it to Christoffersen. In the middle of the envelope read the words “Return to sender.” But now, 72 years later, the letter is finally making its way to its intended recipient.

Using her sleuthing skills, Melissa found a phone number for a Rolf Christoffersen and called it. The man on the other line lived in Santa Barbara, CA, and, wouldn’t you know it, was Christoffersen’s son, also named Rolf.

“Someone called me at my office. They just Googled my name because I have the same name as my father. Melissa asked me where I grew up and I told her. She told me she had the letter. This is how I found out,” Christoffersen’s son, told CNN.

The 66-year-old hadn’t even been born yet when his mother, Virginia, wrote to the his father. Fate must have intervened, because the two Rolfs received the original letter six years to the week that Virginia died.

“I love you Rolf, as I love the warm sun, and that is what you are for my life, the sun about which everything else revolves for me,” she wrote.

So sweet!

“I was so surprised after all these years. I was very happy to find out that a letter like that existed. I am still very emotional,” the elder Christoffersen told CNN.

What a beautiful Mother’s Day gift. There truly are angels out there!
