By now, you’ve likely heard that probiotics, or the good-for-you bacteria and yeast that work to replenish our body with healthy cultures while controlling the harmful bacteria in our gut. You may have even heard of prebiotics — the food that probiotics use for energy — which can have plenty of positive effects on both your gut immunity and health. As it turns out, both probiotics and prebiotics should also have a place in your skincare regimen. Enter Korres’ Hydra-Biome Probiotic Superdose Mask, $49, HSN.

New to the beloved beauty company’s line in September, this probiotic face mask is the first of its kind to be made with real Greek yogurt, according to the company’s website, and the probiotics found within work to balance out your skin much in the same way they do your digestive system.

“The skin’s surface is an ecosystem of living things populating and working in every part of it, called your microbiome,” a Korres rep explained to Woman’s World. “There is an abundant population of microflora thriving on the top surface there, affecting [the] skin’s appearance.  When your microbiome is not balanced, it causes your skin to act out. Probiotics feed the skin to keep your microbiome balanced causing your skin to be healthy looking.”

While “healthy looking” results will vary based on your skincare concerns — dehydrated skin will begin to look more nourished and balanced, for example, while those with blotches or rough texture will start to see marks and scaly patches clearing up — you’ll generally see improvements in elasticity, vibrance, and smoothness.

The magical microorganisms found in this cruelty-free mask also help to provide a solid layering base for the rest of your skincare regimen. “Probiotics and their derivatives, known as lysates, work beautifully with other skincare ingredients,” the Korres rep shared. “As the probiotics break down on skin’s surface, they create brilliant new ingredients for skin, such as hyaluronic acid, peptides, and vitamins, as well as increasing the presence of ceramides.”

That’s especially good news for those with sensitive, mature skin that’s susceptible to issues such as redness, dull complexion, and rough texture. The addition of probiotics has a reversing effect that “leads to diminished signs of aging, better hydration, and … radiance,” the rep assured.

And that’s not all! In addition to its probiotic power, this formula is also chock-full of prebiotics. “Probiotics are the live organisms that feed the microbiome and balance your skin,” the Korres rep clarified. “Prebiotics are plant fibers that stimulate the growth of the probiotics. [The] prebiotics are essentially stimulating the probiotics to super-dose the effect that it will have on your skin.”

Add in three different types of hyaluronic acid for supreme moisture, the chemical compound bisabolol, ginger root extract to sooth parched skin, and a nourishing blend of shea butter, apricot oil, sweet almond oil, and aloe vera, and you’ve got a recipe for the glowing complexion of your dreams.

For maximum results, slather a heavy layer of this cream on for 10 to 15 minutes, two to three times a week. Alternately, you can rub a little on before bedtime to let it work its magic overnight.

You can also get an accompanying Greek yogurt foaming cleanser (regularly $26) to complete your skincare regimen.
