WATCH: When the Microphone Failed During the National Anthem, a Stadium Full of People Erupted Into Song

There are certain things in life that transcend borders; things like good music, delicious food, and acts of kindness might come to mind. But there’s something else you need to add to that list: hockey’s camaraderie.

At Roger’s Place, the hockey stadium that the Edmonton Oilers team calls home, a crowd of 18,000 Canadians came together to sing the American national anthem after the microphone malfunctioned.

Before the Oiler’s third game in a best-of-seven Stanley Cup playoffs series against the Anaheim Ducks, Canadian country singer Brett Kissel was set to take the stage. As Kissel strummed his guitar and opened his mouth to sing, he realized the microphone was not working. Instead of getting flustered or throwing a temper tantrum, he calmly waved his arms like an orchestra conductor and invited the crowd to sing.

The sold-out arena came together for a moving though slightly unsynchronized, rendition of the American national anthem. Given how hard it is for some American singers to remember the words of their own national anthem, we have to give all the Canadians in the crowd a big round of applause. Not many of us know all the words to “O Canada,” Canada’s national anthem.

While Edmonton eventually lost the game, they won the hearts of thousands of Americans watching the game from their TV sets.

“Congratulations to the Edmonton fans for creating such a special moment last night by singing both of the national anthems,” the Anaheim Ducks’ owners Henry and Susan Samueli wrote in a statement. “To hear the audience passionately sing both the Canadian and United States anthems was inspiring and powerful. Well done, Edmonton!”

“Hockey fans are the best fans,” one person wrote. “This is so awesome—thank you Canada! And Hockey fans!!!” someone else tweeted.

Watch the heartwarming performance below and sing along if you know the words!
