If you’re thinking about adding a pup to your family, you might be wondering about the best dog names for a new fur baby. Since dogs are so smart they can learn how to respond to a name, you want to make sure it’s a good one. After all, you don’t want to leave them with a moniker that’s not a perfect fit! Fortunately, the list of top dog names of 2018 is here to provide a few possible suggestions.

Researchers at Banfield Pet Hospital, which is based in Vancouver, Washington, and dubs itself the largest general veterinary practice in the world, analyzed the database of more than 2.5 million dogs and 500,000 cats cared for at multiple Banfield locations this year to find out which pet names were the most popular. If you’re looking to adopt a new doggo, you might be amused to learn that many of the top 10 pup names are similar to human names, such as Molly and Charlie. You may also get a kick out of the more fashionable dog names like Coco. At the very least, you can get inspiration for possible names for your dog long before you get one for yourself.

Even if you already named your precious pet, this list is the perfect excuse to see if you picked a popular name. It sure is funny to think that so many other dogs might share your pooch’s moniker, after all. On the other hand, if your dog’s name is nowhere to be found on the list, maybe that just means it’s unique and stands out from the rest of the pack. It’s hard to not enjoy that! (Psst: You can view the top 10 cat names of 2018 here, if you’re more of a cat person.)
