Family Dog Stayed With Missing Toddler Until Both Were Found

Not all heroes wear capes… or walk on two legs. A family dog is being hailed a hero after he stood guard by a missing toddler until he was found by his parents, and the story behind it is warming the hearts of everyone in his Missouri town and beyond.

William Odom, a 2-year-old boy from Saucier, went missing from his home on Oct. 3. Understandably, his parents were worried sick about him and didn’t know if he was alone or in danger. They joined forces with the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department and people from the neighborhood to search for the youngster. Thankfully, there was a helpful clue left behind that guided them all along the way until they found him sleeping in a truck.

“Every time we found his footprint, we found the [family] dog footprint right beside him. So the dog traveled with him all day,” Harrison County Sheriff Troy Peterson said. “When the little boy was found the dog was still circling the truck and scratching on the truck.”

Though he was found several hours after the search first started, it turned out he hadn’t gotten that far after all — he was only about a quarter of a mile away from his home. According to WBTV, William was first found by another child, who had just gotten off at a school bus stop nearby and heard the horn beeping from the truck. After the authorities reunited the tot with his parents and looked further into the disappearance, they said they did not believe foul play was involved and that instead, William had wandered off on his own.

“It’s an amazing story. We’re very thankful that he is in good health. And we brought him home to his family,” Peterson said.

And a big thanks to his loyal and loving pooch, that made sure he was not truly alone.
