Meet Jolene, the Labradoodle Whose Best Friend Is Her Own Reflection
A heartwarming video of an adorable Labradoodle (a Labrador and poodle mix) chasing after her own reflection has become an internet sensation. And after watching the cute clip ourselves, we can definitely see why.
Although it’s short, the 30-second video shows Jolene the Dolly Doodle (as she’s known on Instagram) putting up a pretty good fight against her very own reflection. As the clip plays, Jolene curiously paws at the floor-length mirror, unsure of how to handle what exactly is going on. Darting back and forth, Jolene suddenly realizes that the other dog is mimicking her. She then crouches down and leaps backward, completely awestruck that this is happening to her. At one point, she even looks back at her owner, almost as if to ask, “Are you seeing this?”

“Jolene is a super sweet mini Labrodoodle, born with a heart on her head and a mustache on her snout,” Jolene’s owner said. “She discovered her reflection out of nowhere and played with herself for about a week. She’d go missing and we’d find her in front of the mirror playing with her reflection,” she continued. “Her name is a nod to the queen of country music, Dolly Parton.”
Since Jolene’s owner posted the video, it has gained more than 270,000 views and 10,000 “likes.”
Can dogs see reflections?
Apparently, dogs are unable to recognize themselves, whether it’s in a mirror, on a video, or in a photo. This makes us wonder: Will Jolene ever realize that’s it’s just her reflection?
“Dogs are very intelligent and adaptable creatures who, like countless others, lack the cognitive development necessary to self-recognize visually,” said Liz Stelow, an animal behavior clinician at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of the University of California, in an interview with National Geographic. “It takes a good deal of sophisticated integration of information about yourself and your own movements and what you’re seeing in front of you in that glass,” added Diana Reiss, an animal psychologist at Hunter College in New York.
Poor, poor Jolene!
Dogs Barking at Their Reflection
Whether Jolene figures out it’s her own reflection or not, we still think the video is worth a watch. Can’t get enough of Jolene’s funny clip? Here’s a compilation of other cute pups barking at the “other dog” in the mirror.
