Meet Lupo, William and Kate’s Adorable Family Pup

Tags:

We all know about Queen Elizabeth’s beloved corgis, but did you know her grandson Prince William and granddaughter-in-law, Kate Middleton, have pets of their own? In fact, one of them is a celebrity in his own right.

The couple’s English cocker spaniel, Lupo, has even been around longer than William and Kate’s kids have been here. When the royal couple were first spotted walking along a beach with the three-year-old pup in tow back in 2012, a representative for the royal couple wouldn’t even confirm the pooch’s name. “It is a private matter,” that spokesman said, per The Daily Beast. But it wasn’t long before we found out the cute pooch’s name is Lupo. Lupo’s mother is Ella, a dog owned by Kate’s parents, and he’s reportedly named after Kate’s paternal great-grandmother, Olive Christiana Lupton.

In 2013, Lupo made headlines again when The Telegraph reported he was persona non grata at the royal Christmas at Sandringham that year. “The Queen made it clear that Lupo was not on the guest list,” a source told the newspaper. “The Duchess is especially fond of the puppy and was sad that he could not accompany them. He had to sit it out at her parents’ home in Berkshire.”

Even if the queen doesn’t love Lupo, however, the British people surely do. That same year, the Daily Mail reported that interest in black cocker spaniels — and thefts of black cocker spaniels — had risen in the months since Lupo’s debut. Plus, the canine is the star of a children’s book series by Aby King, with titles like Lupo and the Secret of Windsor Castle and Lupo and the Theif at the Tower of London. And Lupo also has his own Wikipedia entry.

Lupo isn’t the only pet the William and Kate own, though, as Kate told a guest at the grand opening of the Magic Garden at Hampton Court Palace in 2016. “She said she had a hamster,” said a then nine-year-old girl named Darcey in an interview with Hello! “And Princess Charlotte really likes it because the whiskers always tickle her face.” Let’s just hope Lupo and the hamster get along!
