When Senior Dog’s Favorite Toy Is Discontinued, Internet Comes to His Rescue

Like most senior dogs, Jaxon is stuck in his ways and has made it very clear that he likes one toy, and one toy only: his jolly green dragon, “Greenie.” One day, Jaxon’s mom, Kelli Brown, was startled by the news that her 12-year-old pup’s favorite toy had been discontinued by its manufacturer. In hopes of finding just one more Greenie, Brown took to Twitter, asking PetSmart to help her and her sweet little Jaxon.

“PetSmart, please help,” Brown wrote. “This Top Paw toy has been discontinued, but it’s the only toy 12-year-old Jaxon will play with. Got any laying around? We’ll buy them all up, if you let us! Our internet search brought us no luck. Very sad boy here!”

Once the post went live, hundreds of Twitter users offered their support by retweeting Brown’s plea and recommending other replacement toys her picky senior might like. Sadly, Jaxon’s heart belonged to his Greenie — and according to Brown, no other toy would do. To Jaxon, they were all just sad substitutes for his missing pal, who had been with him a long time.

“He was adopted from our local shelter on December 8, 2014, and I put one of these toys in his stocking the first year we had him. Our other dog got the red version, which was a dragon,” Brown told The Dodo. “And this has just always been the only toy he’s ever played with! We have tons of toys in the house, but he only has eyes for his Greenie.”

Even “The Dogfather” — Matt Nelson, a writer for We Rate Dogs — heard about Jaxon’s dilemma and shared the post with his followers. “Okay, this shattered my heart. Does anybody know where one can find this toy?” Nelson tweeted.

Then, by the grace of goodness, a PetSmart employee saved the day.

“I work at PetSmart and I can check our clearance to see if we have any!” Kendyl Kercho, an employee of a PetSmart in Texas, responded.

After she did some digging, a miracle happened.

“I actually squeaked audibly when I found the clearance toy bin in the back where they were tucked away,” Kercho told The Dodo. “I immediately told my manager, ‘These are the toys I’ve been looking for for my Chihuahua friend in Kentucky!’”

Kercho then boxed up the toys she’d found, added a few treats, and had the box shipped straight to Jaxon.

I ended up finding around seven or eight [toys], asked if Jaxon had a favorite treat, and sent his goodies on their way,” Kercho said.

“Happy to say the power of the internet came through big time. He is so happy right now…thank you all,” Brown tweeted. How sweet!

Jaxon should be set for life now. With eight Greenies now on hand, he’ll never have to worry about losing his favorite toy again!
