Ladies, hang on to your, er, hats, because this story's a true heart-warmer. We've all heard a sweet story or two about caring people who shave their heads in support of a friend or loved one going through cancer. Yet we've never been awed by a family who wanted to show their solidarity with a young baby dealing with a health issue — until now.
The Gutierrez family is from San Antonio, TX, and their youngest member, four-month-old Jonas, was recently diagnosed with a condition called plagiocephaly, or what's more commonly known as “flat head syndrome.” Like many babies his age, Jonas was given a helmet to wear for three to six months to fix the problem. And once his big sister Camila, age 3, saw him, she instinctively knew her little brother could use a friend — so she took it upon herself to make sure little Jonas didn’t feel shy or insecure about his new head gear.
Her solution? She grabbed her bike helmet and began wearing it too. Dad Gary, probably impressed with his daughter and her clever idea, decided to slap on his bike helmet as well. Then Mom Shayna decided to capture the three of them sitting down to breakfast. Once she posted the pics to Facebook, a star Internet family was born.
"Solidarity in the Gutierrez home,” she captioned the adorable photos, which have been making the world smile ever since.
“She’s all about inclusion,” Gary told Buzzfeed News of his daughter. “She wants her brother to be happy. She doesn’t want him to feel different.”
Could you imagine anything sweeter between young siblings? We commend this family for all getting in on the act, and for having a bit of fun with a potentially stressful change for a young baby.
“We are excited to get it decorated soon,” Shayna told Scary Mommy about the helmet, calling Camila's idea “a fun decision.”
We couldn't agree more! Rock on, Guitierrez clan — and send us more cute photos of your family's awesome new style. If the helmet is still a must for Jonas by the holidays, we predict lots more funny and decorative helmet pics to be posted. Fingers crossed!
