As someone who has had a fascination with makeup ever since I was a little girl, I’ve inadvertently become quite the connoisseur of makeup removers. You name it, I’ve tried it. Oil removers? Check. Makeup wipes? Of course. Cleansing milks? You bet. And while I’ve enjoyed some of them, I was never truly satisfied with a makeup remover until I discovered the Face Halo.

What is the Face Halo?

Founded by two Australian mothers looking to simplify the makeup removal process, the Face Halo ($22, Goop) is a washable makeup remover pad made of a microfiber 100 times finer than a strand of hair. As impressive as that sounds, it isn’t even the best part — the Face Halo claims to remove every stitch of makeup with water and only water.

Like anything, the Face Halo’s shelf life isn’t indefinite, so how long does one last? Well, one Face Halo is designed to last up to 200 washes, meaning one pad can, in theory, last you more than six months with proper care! Just thinking about how much money I save by not having to pick up a pack of makeup wipes every two weeks never fails to put a smile on my face.

Why Women Over 50 Will Love the Face Halo, Too

Now I’ll be honest, when I first heard about the Face Halo, I was skeptical. Was I really supposed to believe this little fuzzy, reusable pad was going to remove all of my makeup, even my finicky mascara, with just water? Although doubtful, I was more intrigued than anything and, in the end, delighted to find myself proven wrong. While I was more than excited to see that this item actually did what it claimed, that wasn’t the only benefit I found to using the Face Halo.

Aside from saving you time and money, the biggest plus to using this makeup remover is that it’s also good for your skin. As we mature, it’s important to make sure we’re kinder to our skin, which means avoiding harsh products as well as rubbing, tugging, and pulling at the skin.

I’m already careful when it comes to the products I put on my face due to my sensitive skin, but this makeup remover helped me realize just how rough I was being to my skin. With such little pressure needed to remove even the most stubborn eye makeup, I immediately noticed what happened to my skin when I didn’t rub my face to oblivion. I noticed less lash fallout, softer skin, and less redness and irritation around the more delicate parts of my face. By caressing the skin instead of pulling at it, the Face Halo cleans the skin without damaging it in the process, significantly reducing the chances of wrinkle formation and making it my makeup-remover staple.

How does the Face Halo work?

Thanks to its innovative microfiber design, the Face Halo is able to remove all of your makeup in a few convenient swipes — but how does it work? As you gently move the pad across your face, the Face Halo’s ultra-fine microfibers attract dirt and makeup, trapping them within the pad’s fibers and removing them from the skin. Take one look at the pad mid-use, and you’ll be able to see for yourself just how effective this pad really is.

How to Clean Your Face Halo

Now, there’s probably one major question running through your mind as you read this: How do you clean the Face Halo? When it comes to keeping this wonder puff squeaky clean, you have two options — handwashing and machine washing.

Handwashing: If you wear makeup daily, you may find it beneficial to clean your Face Halo after each use. To clean, simply run your Face Halo under warm water with a splash of your favorite soap, rinse, and repeat until clean. I personally love to use a bit of Dr. Bronner’s Liquid Tea Tree Castile Soap ($16.99, Amazon). A little bit of this concentrated multi-purpose soap goes a long way and having the added antibacterial effect of tea tree oil is a great way to keep any lingering germs at bay.

Machine washing: If you’re a more of an occasional makeup wearer, then you’ll love the ease of being able to throw this puff in the washing machine. Yep, that’s right — you can toss your Face Halo in with either your light or delicate washes to get it looking like new in no time. Just make sure you skip the fabric softener for this cycle as it can reduce the effectiveness of your Face Halo.
