4 Tips for Healthy Winter Skin


The dry, cold weather can be a big problem for our skin health if the right measures aren’t taken to protect ourselves. While our wardrobes might be well-prepared for an unexpected weather front, our skin is often not. To help our skin through this, we’ve gathered a few top tips to help keep skin fresh and hydrated for when the temperature suddenly drops. 

1. Watch out for humidity levels.

Unlike the summer, which typically has more humid weather, the air tends to get drier in the winter, which in turn drains the moisture from skin. In the winter months you’re more likely to suffer from dry or flaky skin, especially if you’re prone to psoriasis, eczema, or other dry-skin conditions. Look for moisturizing products that use anti-inflammatory ingredients that also promote skin cell renewal. It’s also important to ensure that you are drinking enough water and getting enough sleep, as this helps your skin stay hydrated, too.

2. Turn down the heat.

It’s very tempting to turn up the heat during a frosty period, but this can often make your skin condition worse. If your skin feels a little parched despite being indoors all day, you may want to think about looking at the temperature on your radiator. Heated air can bring down the humidity levels in a room, which can leave your skin feeling dry. 

The transition between heated and cold environments also affects the skin, therefore it’s good to moisturize as often as possible especially before going outside, as this will retain your skin’s moisture. To combat the problem without turning down the temperature, you can invest in a humidifier to increase the level of moisture in the air.

3. Avoid hot baths and showers.

After a cold day it’s tempting to jump into a hot shower or bath, but this could be affecting your skin more than you realize. The combination of hot water and steam can actually harm the protective barrier between your skin which can lead to drier skin — so turn the temperature down a little bit or make an effort to hydrate your skin as soon as you step out of the shower. 

4. Swap cold weather comforts for vitamins.

We all know that we are more prone to comfort eating in the winter months. Indulging in our favorite meals during the colder months might satisfy your immediate cravings, but it may take its toll on your skin in the long run. Vegetables such as carrots, squash, pumpkin, and sweet potatoes contain particularly high levels of beta carotene and other carotenoids. Beta carotene itself helps to prevent free radical damage to our cells that can result in aging and converts to vitamin A in our body, helping our skin to resist damage and heal quickly.
