6 Ways to Save Money on Haircuts

Tags:

There’s no question that going to the hairdresser is an important part of many women’s beauty routines, but this practice can also be responsible for taking lots of your hard-earned dollars out of your wallet. Sound like you? Then check out the easiest tips and tricks for saving cash on haircuts below.

1. If you have bangs, ask about a bang trim.

Any woman who has bangs knows that one of the most urgent reasons for a haircut has to be bangs that have grown too long. (Hello, hair creeping into your eyelashes!) But if you’re happy with the rest of your cut, it’s worth asking hairdressers about any discounts they offer for a simple bang trim. You never know: Some salons even offer complimentary bang snips between haircuts!

2. Consider donating long locks, if you have them.

If you’re willing to chop off about, say, 10 inches of your hair for charity, you have a good chance of getting this haircut done for a discounted price or maybe even for free if you get lucky. In case you’re wondering: Many charities are totally OK with gray hair for donations. Even Locks of Love — a well-known hairpiece charity for children — will accept gray hair and sell it in order to offset manufacturing costs.

3. Keep a close eye out for haircut coupons.

Whether they’re from Groupon, Retail Me Not, or even a local salon, haircut discounts are a lot easier to come by than you might think. Long before you need your next haircut, take a few moments to browse some of your favorite go-to couponing websites and see which ones offer the best deals for your specific hair needs. This will come in serious handy when it’s time for your next trim!

4. Try skipping the highlights, lowlights, and any other unnecessary hair coloring.

It’s no secret that dyeing your hair can get seriously expensive. (Many hair coloring services cost more than haircuts themselves.) And if you continue this same routine alongside trims, the costs can add up. There’s nothing wrong with switching up your ‘do’s hue every now and then, but it’s not going to help you save money in the long run. Consider returning to your natural shades and see how you feel.

5. Think about stretching time between haircuts.

Many salons recommend returning for a follow-up trim six weeks after your latest haircut — or even sooner if you have a precision cut. But if your hairstyle is super-easy to maintain, or if your hair tends to grow slowly, there’s really no need to heed to the standard six-week rule. Plus: You’ll probably see much more of a difference with your look after a haircut if you wait just a tad bit longer for it.

6. Consider visiting a beauty school.

Many beauty schools offer discounted or even free haircuts, since their students are not completely out of the classroom yet. If you’re the adventurous type and willing to take a risk with a brand-new hairdresser, you might just be surprised with a fabulous new style you never even considered getting before. Hey, even the best hairstylists in the whole world had to start somewhere!
